The ingredient is diluted during washing and removed after a short contact time, while surfactants, fragrance and polymers create a harsher chemical environment than a leave-on serum. That does not make the format impossible. It means the brief must explain why the peptide is present, what survives manufacture, and which finished-product claim can actually be supported.

Decide whether the peptide earns its place in a rinse-off formula

Define the target as cleansing mildness, conditioned after-feel or a coordinated peptide range. Do not assume a serum mechanism transfers to a 30-second wash. If the project cannot support a peptide-specific outcome, use conservative ingredient-story language and allocate more budget to mild surfactant balance, humectancy and user testing.

Calculate exposure from the use dose

State peptide active basis, addition rate, cleanser dose and expected contact time. A supplier's 2% stock addition may deliver only trace peptide before rinse. Normalize competing quotes to active peptide per wash, not kilograms of trade blend. Include carrier solvents and preservatives because they can affect clarity, odor and the total preservative system.

Screen surfactant compatibility deliberately

Prepare cleanser base, peptide-only stock dilution and finished controls. Anionic, amphoteric and nonionic surfactant mixtures can interact differently with charged peptides or carrier systems. Track haze, precipitation, color, viscosity and foam after 24 to 48 hours and aging. A clear freshly mixed sample may form deposits after fragrance addition or cold storage.

Set pH for the complete cleansing system

Choose a practical common range for the surfactants, preservative, rheology modifier, peptide grade and eye/skin tolerability target. Measure after full equilibration because surfactant concentrates and peptide buffers can shift the result. Avoid repeated salt and acid corrections late in scale-up; both can move viscosity unpredictably.

Protect the peptide during processing

Add the peptide at the lowest validated temperature after the main surfactant blend is uniform. Use low-aeration mixing and document hold time. High shear is rarely needed for a simple peptide solution and may create foam that hides incomplete mixing. For pearlized or hot-process cleansers, compare peptide recovery before and after the real thermal cycle.

Do not use foam as the only mildness measure

Rich foam can coexist with irritation, and low foam can clean effectively. Evaluate cleansing, rinse, tightness, eye-area exposure and after-feel using a defined finished-product protocol. If claiming sulfate-free, verify every trade blend. If claiming microbiome friendly or barrier support, obtain evidence that matches the formula and wording.

Validate the dispenser with aged product

Foam pumps require a narrow viscosity and clean fluid path; gel pumps tolerate different rheology. Test priming, output, foam density, dose, leakage, clogging and evacuation at the start and end of pack life. Peptide or polymer deposits can obstruct mesh components. Qualify the actual actuator, not a visually similar sample.

Preservation and bulk hygiene remain critical

A rinse-off product is water-rich and repeatedly exposed during use. Supplier preservatives in peptide and surfactant stocks are not a complete finished system. Define water quality, bulk hold, filling hygiene and preservative efficacy assessment. Refillable or large salon packs require separate contamination and transfer controls.

Release claims and costs honestly

Avoid tissue repair, collagen rebuilding or treatment language based only on an ingredient study. Support cleansing and appearance or feel claims on the marketed product. The OEM quote should separate peptide, surfactants, package, decoration, testing, filling and unused component liabilities. Freeze the peptide product code and require notification of composition changes.
